Sweeney was on tour with her own show, Older & Wider, when she met McEnany and Mason, who were inspired by her performance. The three of them collaborated to create a storytelling show at the IO Theater in 2016, which would eventually become the basis for 'Work in Progress.' Sweeney's character Pat was initially weaponized against her, but she saw it as an opportunity to learn how to not be that person in real life.

In 'Work in Progress,' Sweeney plays a version of herself, exploring the creepiest aspects of her personality and her desperation to please others. She admits that playing herself can be uncomfortable at times, but it's also cathartic.

'In a way, playing myself, kind of the creepiest aspects of myself, the desperation to be part of things and to please others but still express myself, all that part of me is a part of me,' Sweeney shares. 'I feel like a lot of it really is how I am, but I don't like that part of myself.'

Sweeney's willingness to confront her own insecurities and flaws is what makes 'Work in Progress' so compelling. Her show is not afraid to tackle tough topics, from relationships to identity, with humor and heart.

'It's really accentuated in the show,' Sweeney says about her character Pat. 'I think that's why it's been so popular – people relate to this kind of ambivalence.'

'I believe this story about Julia Sweeney and Pat started like 'Julia Sweeney ruined my life,'' Sweeney says with a laugh. 'I believe that was the first line, but that's hyperbolic, obviously.'
